I happened to see Late Arjun Singh when he was convalescing in a hotel following Heart bypass surgery. I was told that he is in a miserable condition, spending days & nights sitting in bed. When examined he was in advanced cardiac failure with fluid collected in the lung & pleura. Oxygen, Pleural aspiration, IV diuretic & strict control of salt & water was instituted. He improved and could sleep flat with one pillow. He profusely thanked me and asked me to supervise his treatment. A year later he wanted to have further consultation in United States. I accompanied him to Philadelphia where he was admitted in a cardiac hospital for seven days. A day before discharge, he was interviewed by the Professor of Cardiology and told that this hospital has nothing new to offer. You are in safe hands with Dr Shahi and continue your treatment. While coming back to the hotel, he told me what was the use of coming to coming to USA?. I said that if diagnosis is correct, the treatment doesn’t vary in any hospital. A year later he had fainting attacks and I implanted dual chamber pacemaker. He led a normal life subsequently and attended to his official work as HRD minister.

Late Arjun Singh was a voracious reader of history and political science. I accompanied him to UK, France and Germany. While driving through Main Avenue of Paris, he asked the Driver to stop near a small coffee house. he told me that this coffee house was the centre of French revolution. In United States also, he visited Valley Forge the centre of American civil war. Late Arjun Singh had a vision for India, where people of all caste, communities and religion work together, peacefully for progress and development of India.
